The Sahara Desert is the focal point of any Moroccan itinerary. It is the part children talk about
long after returning home. For parents planning logistics from thousands of miles away, the desert raises serious
questions: How do you manage the heat? What do children eat out there? Is sleeping in the dunes actually safe?

The short answer is yes, it is safe. Morocco has spent decades developing desert hospitality. You are not booking
a rugged, unassisted expedition. You are booking a highly organized experience that delivers the feeling of raw
wilderness with the comfort of a well-run hotel.

Merzouga vs. Zagora: Choosing Your Region

The first decision is geographic. Morocco has two main desert regions that cater to tourists, and they offer very
different experiences.

Region Distance from Marrakech Dune Type Best For
Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) Approx. 10 hours by road Tall rolling orange dunes, up to 150 meters Families with older children who want the classic Sahara experience
Zagora Approx. 6 hours by road Smaller, rockier dunes Families with toddlers or limited time
Managing the Long Drive
We do not do the Merzouga drive in a single day. That would damage the morale of young travelers before they even
reach the dunes. We always split the journey and stay overnight in the Dades or Todra Gorges, turning a long
transfer into a genuine exploration of ancient rock valleys.

The Camel Ride: What Parents Need to Know

Placing a small child on a camel is a common source of parental anxiety. Touring camels are docile animals
accustomed to carrying visitors across these same dunes every day.

Children under six ride securely strapped onto the saddle alongside a parent or a local cameleer. Children aged
seven and up ride their own camel while an experienced handler walks beside them holding the lead rope. The
standard sunset ride lasts around 45 minutes.

Inside a Luxury Desert Camp

Forget any notion of basic camping. Moroccan luxury desert camps are functionally equivalent to hotel suites
built inside the dunes. Family tents are large, anchored into the sand, and fitted with proper beds, thick duvets,
and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. Camp chefs serve a full dinner by candlelight. In the
evening, children gather around a fire to listen to Berber music under a clear, unpolluted sky.
