a good morocco travel itinerary comes down to one question: how many days do you actually have? seven is the sweet spot for most families. you get marrakech, the sahara, and a second city without rushing. ten days opens up the atlas mountains and the coast. and 14 days lets you see nearly everything without that “we spent the whole trip in a car” feeling. i build these routes daily — here’s what actually works.
The 5-day Morocco itinerary: tight but doable
five days is the minimum i’d recommend, and only if you’re okay skipping the north. the route is simple: marrakech → atlas mountains → ait benhaddou → sahara desert → fes (or back to marrakech).
day one and two in marrakech — the medina, the souks, jardin majorelle. day three you drive through the tizi n’tichka pass to ait benhaddou. day four is the sahara — camel ride and overnight in a merzouga desert camp. day five you drive to fes or return to marrakech.

with kids, five days is tight. the drive from marrakech to the desert takes 7-8 hours with stops, and doing that with a toddler who needs naps is a stretch. our 5-day private route plan breaks the drive into manageable chunks, but you’re still covering a lot of ground fast.
The 7-day Morocco itinerary: the most popular family route
seven days is what i recommend to about 70% of families who ask. it gives you breathing room without burning through vacation days.
the classic 7-day route: marrakech (2 nights) → atlas mountains and ait benhaddou (1 night in dades or todra gorge) → sahara desert merzouga (1 night) → fes (2 nights) → departure. your private driver handles the logistics between cities, and your kids can sleep in the car during the drives.
this is the itinerary where families tell me “it felt like we saw everything without being exhausted.” that’s the goal.
our 7-day family itinerary has the detailed day-by-day breakdown, including which riads we book for families with small children.
The 10-day Morocco itinerary: the full experience
ten days is where you stop rushing and start actually living the trip. you add the coast, or the blue city, or an extra day in the atlas mountains doing something beyond driving through.
a strong 10-day route: marrakech (2 nights) → essaouira (1 night) → atlas mountains (1 night) → sahara desert (1 night) → fes (2 nights) → chefchaouen (1 night) → departure from tangier or fes.

with kids, 10 days means you can build in a pool day at your riad, a proper atlas mountains day trip with a mule ride, and a slow morning in essaouira watching fishing boats without checking the clock. that pace changes the whole trip.

The 14-day Morocco itinerary: the deep dive
two weeks lets you cover north to south without the “highlight reel” feeling. you can explore fes properly — two or three days, not a rushed overnight. you can spend a real day at volubilis (the roman ruins near meknes, which most short itineraries skip). you can add rabat for a morning without feeling like you’re ticking boxes.
for families, 14 days also means you can build in genuine rest days. one day with no itinerary at all — just the riad pool and a wander. kids need that. parents need that.
our 14-day private route plan covers every combination: north-to-south, south-to-north, and loop routes.
Which itinerary length works best for families with kids?
here’s the honest answer based on the age of your kids:
toddlers (under 4): 7 days max. keep the drives short, the schedule loose, and skip the north. marrakech + desert + coast is enough. read our toddler-specific guide for pacing advice.
kids 5-12: 7-10 days. this is the goldilocks age for morocco. they’re old enough for camel rides, medina exploring, and overnight desert camps. they’re young enough to still think it’s all magic.
teenagers: 10-14 days. they can handle more driving, they want more activities (sandboarding, cooking classes, mountain trekking), and they’ll actually remember it. our teenager itinerary leans into the adventure side.
Driving distances you need to know
| Route | Distance | Drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou | 185 km | 3.5 hours | Mountain pass, scenic stops |
| Ait Benhaddou → Merzouga | 360 km | 6 hours | Via Dades or Todra gorge |
| Merzouga → Fes | 460 km | 7-8 hours | Long day, break at Ifrane |
| Fes → Chefchaouen | 210 km | 4 hours | Mountain roads, beautiful drive |
| Marrakech → Essaouira | 175 km | 2.5 hours | Easy day trip or overnight |
these times are real driving times with a private driver, not google maps estimates. add 30-60 minutes for stops with kids.
Start building your itinerary
every morocco travel itinerary we build starts with three things: your dates, your kids’ ages, and your arrival city. from there, we map the route, book the riads, arrange the private driver, and line up licensed guides in each city.

tell us how many days you have and we’ll build the route. private driver, hand-picked riads, licensed guides in every city. no deposit to start planning.
the biggest mistake i see families make? trying to fit a 10-day itinerary into 7 days. morocco rewards slow travel. pick fewer stops, stay longer in each one, and your kids will actually absorb the place instead of just seeing it through a car window.
