Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou is believed to have been built in the 11th century and originally served as a caravan stop, acting as a crossroads for commerce and culture. The village held an important position as part of the trade routes crossing the Sahara Desert, facilitating the exchange of many cultures through trade. Especially during the times when salt, gold, and spices were actively traded, the village is thought to have flourished greatly.

The village buildings are constructed in the traditional style known as ‘kasbah,’ made from a mixture of mud and straw, with uniformly reddish-brown exterior walls. These structures are characterized by thick walls and narrow windows, designed to adapt to the arid climate. Inside the fortress-like walls that surround the village, houses stand closely together, where families have lived for generations.

A typical kasbah features a defensive structure that resembles a fortress, with tower-like buildings and defensive walls rising along the exterior.
