Atlas Mountains with Kids: Day Trips and Overnight Routes from Marrakech

The Atlas Mountains begin less than an hour from Marrakech and rise to 4167m at Jebel Toubkal. Families do not need a summit trek to have a real mountain day. Valleys, walnut groves, river lunches, mule paths, and Berber villages are enough.

Ourika Valley

Ourika is the easiest mountain escape: about one hour from Marrakech on a paved road, with green valley scenery, Berber villages, and riverside tagine restaurants. Suitable from age 2. After heavy rain, check conditions because flash flooding can affect the valley.

Imlil and the Toubkal Foothills

Imlil is about 1.5 hours from Marrakech and is the start point for Toubkal treks. Families can do a mule-supported loop to Aroumd village, usually 3-4 hours including tea stops. Best for kids 5+ with mule help and 10+ walking independently.

Cascades d’Ouzoud

Ouzoud is a longer day at 2.5-3 hours each way, but the 110m waterfall is one of Morocco’s strongest family nature stops. The path around the falls takes about 45 minutes, and Barbary macaques are often seen above the cliffs.

Tizi n’Tichka Pass

This is not a day trip; it is the spectacular road between Marrakech and Ouarzazate. At 2260m, it gives families high mountain views on the way to Ait Ben Haddou and the Sahara.
