Volubilis

Volubilis

Volubilis, an ancient Roman city located in northern Morocco, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded around the 3rd century BC and later becoming an important base for the Roman Empire, the city is a valuable testament to the prosperity of Roman civilization on the African continent. Its vast grounds, well-preserved architecture, and beautiful surrounding natural environment offer a fascinating experience for visitors.

Historical background

Volubilis was founded by the Berbers around the 3rd century BC and later came into contact with the Carthaginians. It came under Roman control in 40 BC and flourished as part of the Roman province of Mauritania Tingitana. The city was particularly known for its olive oil production, becoming an important economic center that supplied the entire Roman Empire.

After the decline of the Roman Empire, the area continued for a time under the control of medieval Islamic dynasties, but the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 destroyed many of Volubilis’ structures and the area was subsequently abandoned.

Architecture and attractions

Volubilis is an archaeological site covering an area of approximately 42 hectares, and contains many architectural remains that tell the story of life in the Roman era. Below are some of the main highlights.

1. Arc de Triomphe

The city’s iconic Triumphal Arch was built in honour of Emperor Septimius Severus and is a remarkably well-preserved stone structure showcasing beautiful carvings and architectural techniques.

2. Basilica

The Basilica, located in one corner of the square, is an important building that served as an administrative center at the time. Although only the towering columns remain today, you can still imagine its grandeur.

3. Mosaic floor

The Volubilis ruins are home to many exceptionally well-preserved mosaic floors. These decorated the floors of Roman houses and depict scenes from mythology and everyday life. Don’t miss the intricate, colorful mosaics, such as “The Labors of Hercules” and “Orpheus and the Animals.”

4. Public bath

The remains of the public baths, an essential part of Roman life, are also worth seeing. Remains of hot and cold baths and even a sauna remain, offering a glimpse into the sophisticated lifestyle of the people of that time.

5. Houses and water tanks

At Volubilis, remains of the houses and cisterns of wealthy families of the time can also be seen, testifying to the high level of Roman construction and living standards.

Natural environment and surrounding scenery

Volubilis is surrounded by beautiful countryside, characterized by olive groves and rolling hills. Walking through the ruins, you can enjoy the surrounding nature and ancient atmosphere at the same time. Parts of the ruins also offer impressive views of the surrounding villages and mountains.

Tourist information and points of interest

Volubilis is an easy day trip from the Moroccan capital, Rabat, and the northern cities of Fez and Meknes. Many tour companies offer sightseeing tours to Volubilis, and guided tours provide detailed information about the history and background of the ruins.

The best time to visit is during the cooler months of spring and autumn. In summer, temperatures can be high, so visiting early in the morning or in the evening is best. We recommend bringing comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen to ensure a comfortable walk around the ruins’ vast grounds.

Cultural significance and preservation efforts

Volubilis is an important piece of evidence of the Roman Empire’s influence on the African continent, and is also a valuable part of Morocco’s historical heritage. Preservation efforts are underway by the Moroccan government and UNESCO, with restoration and research being carried out on the ruins.

summary
